IAG New Zealand appoints Phillip Gibson as chief executive

IAG has appointed Phillip Gibson as chief executive of IAG New Zealand, effective 2nd March and subject to regulatory approvals.

Gibson brings more than 30 years of insurance, advisory and technology leadership experience from senior roles in Canada and the United States, including positions at Accenture, Aviva Canada, Allstate and Travelers.

He was most recently senior executive advisor at Accenture, following seven years with Aviva Canada in roles spanning data science and personal and commercial insurance.

During his time at Aviva Canada, Gibson served as executive vice president and managing director of personal insurance and data science, where he led a turnaround in the personal insurance division and lifted customer and broker satisfaction as well as employee engagement.

“He previously held senior leadership positions at Allstate and Travelers across both personal and commercial lines.

Nick Hawkins, IAG managing director and CEO, said: “Phil will bring deep global insurance and technology leadership expertise to IAG as well as a track record in successfully executing on business strategy to deliver to customers and brokers.

“We’re looking forward to Phil joining our Group Leadership Team.”

Gibson said he was excited to take on the role, saying: “I am thrilled to be joining IAG New Zealand at such a pivotal time for the business as it continues to focus on growth while delivering to customers, partners and brokers. I look forward to working with the IAG team to deliver great customer outcomes.”

Gibson will replace Amanda Whiting, who has led IAG New Zealand since 2021 and will remain in her role until March to ensure a smooth transition before returning to IAG in Australia.

Hawkins paid tribute to Whiting’s tenure, saying: “Amanda has guided our New Zealand business through significant challenges, including natural disasters, while strengthening our pricing expertise, risk management, and retail presence.

“She is highly regarded by her team, our customers, partners, and the wider market. As Amanda prepares to return to Australia into a Group role at IAG, I want to thank her for her outstanding and ongoing contribution to IAG.”
