ASB cuts variable lending rates following Reserve Bank OCR decision

ASB is cutting variable lending rates across its home loan and business products in response to the Reserve Bank of New Zealand’s latest official cash rate announcement.

The bank’s housing variable rate will drop from 6.29% to 5.99%, while the Orbit variable rate will fall from 6.39% to 6.09%. Its Back My Build product will reduce from 3.84% to 3.54%. The new rates take effect from Friday 10th October for new customers and Wednesday 15th October for existing borrowers.

Adam Boyd, executive general manager of personal banking at ASB, said the changes would help ease financial pressure for customers. “We know New Zealanders are navigating an uncertain economic outlook, but we are seeing encouraging signs. These cuts to our variable rates, along with our fixed rate changes last week, will benefit households and businesses across the country,” he said.

ASB will also reduce rates on some savings products, including Savings on Call and Savings Plus, by between 35 and 50 basis points in response to the OCR change.

The rate cuts follow similar moves by other major banks and reflect growing competition in New Zealand’s mortgage market as the effects of monetary easing begin to flow through to borrowers and savers alike.
